uBlock Origin is a free, open-source content blocker with filter lists, cosmetic filtering and advanced controls. Firefox is the clearest starting point, including Firefox on Android. The original extension is no longer a current Chrome Web Store option; Chrome readers should compare uBlock Origin Lite instead.

Who should consider uBlock Origin
uBlock Origin, or uBO, is a useful starting point if you use Firefox and want a browser content blocker without a subscription. The project is free and open source, with filter lists and optional advanced controls. It filters requests and page elements; it is not a device antivirus or an encrypted VPN connection.
The buying decision is therefore different from comparing paid security bundles. First decide whether a browser-only solution matches where you see unwanted content. If the problem appears in a separate mobile game or desktop application, installing a Firefox extension will not automatically change that application.
Browser compatibility matters more than old rankings
The official project recommends Firefox and provides desktop and Android installation links. Its current browser-status table says the original extension has been removed from the Chrome Web Store. uBlock Origin Lite is a separate project intended for the newer extension model, not a paid edition of the original.
For a Chrome user, an old article recommending the original extension can lead to confusion or a lookalike download. Follow the maintained project links and check the listed publisher. Avoid unofficial installers that ask for payment or unrelated software to enable what they call a required upgrade.
Start with the normal filtering configuration
The default setup is a reasonable place to begin. Open several pages you normally read and check whether menus, embedded media and sign-in forms still work. More enabled lists are not automatically better: overlapping filters can make troubleshooting more difficult without adding anything useful to your routine.
If you want to learn advanced filtering, change a single rule at a time and keep a record of what it affects. The goal is a usable browser with intentional protection, not the largest possible blocked-request counter. A counter does not measure how much personal information a website has learned about you.

- Overlapping blockers and aggressive rules can complicate page behavior
How to handle a site that stops working
Consider a community forum whose login form no longer appears. Temporarily turn off uBO for that site and reload, then check whether the form returns. If it does, restore protection and investigate the narrowest suitable exception or report the issue using the project’s support guidance. Do not post account tokens or private URLs in a public report.
Avoid installing multiple content blockers in the same browser. The project specifically advises against combining uBO with another blocker. Two overlapping tools make it harder to know which rule caused a problem, and changing settings in one may conceal what the other is doing.
Where its protection ends
A browser blocker can reduce unwanted requests and advertising, but it cannot make a malicious download safe after you run it outside the browser. Keep the operating system and browser updated and use the device’s normal protections. An allowed page is not a certificate that every link on it is trustworthy.
Our view: uBO is a strong option to investigate for Firefox users who want capable free filtering and are willing to learn the basic per-site controls. Choose uBO Lite if the browser’s current extension support calls for it. We do not claim a measured blocking rate or permanent success on a changing video service.

No. Lite is a separate content-blocking implementation. It is not an upgrade purchase that unlocks the original extension.
