Mullvad uses a numbered account and a flat monthly pricing model, making it worth considering if you want a straightforward subscription decision. Its current allowance is five devices and it does not provide port forwarding. Evaluate the VPN separately from Mullvad Browser, which is a different product.

Who the account model may suit
Mullvad is worth a look if reducing the information involved in creating a VPN account is a priority. You generate an account number rather than begin with a conventional email-and-password signup. That number needs to be stored carefully: the absence of the usual email login changes how you should think about account access and recovery.
For a shared household, decide who keeps the account details and handles payments. Avoid putting the number in a shared screenshot, a public support request or an unprotected note. A minimal signup does not make every later interaction anonymous; payment choices and support conversations can still carry information.
A pricing model you can compare directly
At the source check, Mullvad lists a flat €5 monthly rate, five devices and no port forwarding. Longer prepayment does not reduce the standard monthly price. Its refund policy has payment-specific conditions, including an exception for cash payments. Check the current pricing page and your payment method before topping up.
The practical advantage of a flat rate is that you can compare a one-month experiment with the same service over a longer period without calculating a large introductory discount. It does not establish that the VPN is the least expensive option. Compare the actual amount you expect to spend over the time you need it.
VPN and browser are different tools
Mullvad publishes downloads for its VPN apps and separately offers Mullvad Browser. Installing a privacy-oriented browser is not the same as enabling a VPN tunnel for the device. Conversely, turning on a VPN does not remove the account cookies already stored in another browser.
Imagine a traveler opening a familiar shopping account after connecting through the VPN. The website can still recognize the signed-in account. The connection may have a different public IP address, but the user has deliberately supplied another identifier. Evaluate privacy in terms of who you are trying to limit, and which signals remain visible.

What to check on your own network
Begin with the app recommended for your operating system. Verify the connection state, open ordinary websites and try sleep and wake. Then switch between the networks you actually use. If a necessary local service stops working, identify the relevant setting rather than turning off several protections at once.
Keep one simple record of the app version, operating system and behavior you observed. Connection reliability can vary by network and location, so one successful session is not a universal result. If you need incoming connections for an authorized service, the absence of port forwarding is a reason to investigate another approach before paying.
Our view of the trade-off
Mullvad belongs on a shortlist centered on account minimization and understandable billing. It is not an automatic choice for someone whose main requirement is a particular streaming catalogue or a larger household device allowance. Test the activities that matter to you and compare those results with the costs.
Consider PIA if a broader simultaneous-device allowance is central, or Proton VPN if a free entry point matters. Those are different reasons to choose, not a universal ranking. We have not measured Mullvad’s speed or verified its infrastructure; this documentation-based review explains the buying decision and the checks still needed.
