Private Internet Access combines apps for common desktop and mobile platforms with a broad set of connection controls. Its advertised unlimited device connections can appeal to a household with several devices. Verify split tunneling and other advanced settings in the specific app you will use; a browser extension has a narrower scope.

Where PIA fits
Private Internet Access, usually shortened to PIA, is worth comparing if you want a VPN with visible connection choices and coverage for several personal devices. Its feature page lists native Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iOS apps, plus unlimited device connections. That makes household installation a useful starting point for evaluation.
A generous allowance does not make the installation automatic. List the laptop, phone, television and other equipment you expect to use, then confirm how each connects. A supported router configuration is different from a native app on a television, and the person maintaining the router needs a recovery plan if the connection fails.
Separate the controls by purpose
PIA documents WireGuard and OpenVPN, split tunneling, connection-failure controls and DNS-level MACE filtering. Availability and implementation depend on the platform. A protocol changes how the tunnel is established; split tunneling chooses which traffic uses it; domain filtering attempts to block particular destinations. These are separate decisions.
For example, excluding a local business application from the tunnel may solve a connectivity issue, but it also changes the protection for that application. Keep an explicit list of exceptions. Do not assume that a green connected state means every program follows the same route after you have customized the settings.
A useful household evaluation
Try a short evaluation on one computer and one phone before deploying everywhere. Check ordinary browsing, a voice call, sleep and wake, and a transition from Wi-Fi to mobile data. Notice whether the app reconnects and whether a blocked connection has a clear recovery step. Repeat the tasks at the time you normally use them.
For a family device, make the expected behavior understandable. If a kill switch blocks traffic, the person using the device should know where to look instead of repeatedly changing unrelated Wi-Fi settings. Keep the configuration simple until those basic situations work reliably.

Streaming and legitimate file sharing
The provider advertises streaming and P2P uses, but that is not a guarantee that your preferred service will accept a VPN address today. Test the exact device, service and account you intend to use. Check the service’s terms and do not buy a long subscription on the strength of an undated compatibility claim.
For files you are entitled to share, evaluate the connection-failure behavior as well as transfer speed. A fast completed download does not tell you what happens when a laptop sleeps or the VPN drops. Avoid publishing an IP address in a screenshot or support post when documenting your setup.
Our assessment and buying checks
PIA is a reasonable shortlist candidate when device allowance and configuration options are priorities. It may be less attractive for someone who wants to avoid decisions about routing and simply needs a basic connection. Compare the app experience with NordVPN and the account model with Mullvad before choosing.
Read the full charge for the initial term and the later renewal, including optional dedicated-address or other add-ons. A low monthly equivalent may require a much larger advance payment. We have not independently tested PIA’s throughput, leaks or service availability, so this review supplies a practical evaluation plan rather than a performance score.

Does PIA MACE replace a browser ad blocker?
DNS filtering blocks selected destinations. It cannot do every page-level job of a browser content blocker, and its availability should be checked in the app you use.
Is PIA guaranteed to work with my streaming service?
No. Compatibility can change by service, location and device. Test your intended use before committing to a long term.
