First establish whether the site is down, your account lacks access, or your network is blocking it. A VPN can change the network path, but it cannot fix every error or give you permission to bypass an access restriction.
Read the error before changing tools
“This site cannot be reached,” “access denied,” and “subscription required” point to different problems. Note the exact message, domain, device, and network. Try another public page on the same site. A failed login should be handled through the service’s account recovery process, not through a random proxy.
Check the organisation’s official status page if one is available. If only your browser fails, a stale extension or damaged site data may be involved. Avoid clearing every saved login as your first step; test a fresh browser profile or a private window to isolate the cause.
Use a controlled comparison
- Confirm the address by opening a known bookmark or typing the official domain. Search ads and imitation mirrors can lead elsewhere.
- Try a second browser with no extra extensions. If that works, enable extensions individually to find the conflict.
- Try a connection you are authorised to use, such as your own mobile hotspot. A different result suggests a network-specific issue.
- Check whether the page requires an account, membership, or regional entitlement. Contact the provider if your valid access is failing.
- On a managed work or school connection, ask the administrator to review the block instead of changing security settings without permission.
When a VPN can be relevant
A VPN changes the route your traffic follows and normally changes the public IP a website sees. It may help with a network-level restriction, routing problem, or a blocked exit address. It may also fail if the network blocks VPN traffic or the destination rejects VPN servers.

Why a free web proxy can make things worse
A web proxy may ask you to open the destination inside its own page. That introduces another service between you and the content, often with unclear privacy and security properties. It may break downloads, login flows, or site protections.
Avoid entering email, banking, or work credentials through an unfamiliar proxy. Do not download a replacement browser or root certificate from an error page. A public page being inconvenient to reach is not a good reason to hand another operator access to an important account.
If you are the site owner
A block affecting many visitors may come from your firewall, bot protection, or server configuration. Review request logs for the failed URL and status rather than repeatedly relaxing every security setting. Check whether a rule is targeting a shared IP or a legitimate region too broadly.
An HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect loop is a server problem. Visitors should not need to disable browser security to use your site. Document the correct origin, proxy settings, and one canonical redirect path so that the fix lasts.

Will changing DNS always unblock a site?
No. DNS is one part of resolving a name. It cannot fix an account restriction or a server rejecting your connection.
