Its filtering modes and permissions affect what it can do, so review the defaults rather than assuming it reproduces every advanced uBlock Origin feature.

AdGuard
AdGuard offers a browser extension alongside separate desktop, mobile and DNS products. Start with the free extension when the problem is advertising inside a supported browser. Evaluate an app only if you need its additional scope, and choose the iOS product specifically for Safari rather than assuming a desktop extension works everywhere.

Adblock Plus
Adblock Plus is a free, open-source blocker with an optional paid offering. Its Acceptable Ads setting allows qualifying advertisements by default and can be turned off. It is worth comparing if you want familiar browser controls and a clear choice about allowing some ads, but mobile versions have specific browser limits.

Surfshark CleanWeb
CleanWeb is a filtering feature within Surfshark’s product range. It makes sense to investigate if you already use, or are considering, Surfshark. The VPN app filters while connected; supported desktop browser extensions offer a separate filtering experience without requiring a VPN connection.

NordVPN Threat Protection

Start with your browser. Investigate uBlock Origin on supported Firefox setups, uBlock Origin Lite on compatible MV3 browsers, and a supported Safari content blocker on Apple devices. Match the filtering layer to the problem; no blocker can promise to remove every ad.
The best blocker depends on where the ads appear
An extension in one browser, a DNS filter on a network, and an app that filters a device’s traffic have different capabilities. Start by identifying whether your problem appears on websites, inside an app, or as a system notification. The answer determines which layer can help.
A reputable blocker should explain who maintains it, what permissions it needs, how its rules are updated, and how to make a narrow exception when a site breaks. Do not use the number of blocked requests as a universal privacy score. Ten requests are not necessarily more harmful than one.

A current browser check matters
The official uBlock Origin project states that its Chrome Web Store listing was removed on August 31, 2026. That is a reason to check your browser before following an old installation guide. uBlock Origin Lite is a separate project designed around the newer extension model, with different capabilities.
Do not install an archived extension from an unknown download site to recreate an older setup. Use the maintainer’s official links and verify the publisher. A familiar icon or a large review count does not prove that two similarly named extensions are related.
Permissions deserve a moment of attention
A browser blocker may need access to the pages where it filters content. That permission can be legitimate, but it is powerful. Read the project’s explanation, check whether access can be limited, and remove extensions you no longer use.
An extension asking to read and change data on websites should not be installed casually. Verify the developer, distribution route, privacy statement, and update history. If ownership or permissions change significantly, reconsider whether the tool still fits your trust decision.
Choose one primary blocker
Stacking several blockers can make troubleshooting harder and may add unnecessary work to each page. Start with one maintained tool and its default recommended lists. Add specialised rules only when you can explain the problem they solve.
If a checkout, sign-in button, or video player breaks, pause filtering for that site or use a narrow exception. Reload and confirm the cause. Once you finish, remove a temporary exception if you do not want it to remain. Disabling every protection globally is a poor permanent workaround.
How to evaluate a blocker safely
- Install from the official project or verified extension-store link. Record the publisher and version.
- Visit a few normal sites you use regularly. Check readability, login, search, checkout, and media playback.
- Inspect the requested permissions and the default filtering mode. Avoid granting broader access without a reason.
- Test the site exception control so you know how to recover when a page breaks.
- Review update behaviour and the maintainer’s guidance. Filtering changes as sites change.
- For a paid tool, compare the actual improvement with a reputable free alternative and the browser’s built-in controls.
What about video sites and social feeds?
Video advertising and sponsored social posts are difficult targets because delivery methods change and may share infrastructure with the content you want. A method that works today may stop working tomorrow. We do not promise permanent ad-free access to a particular platform.
Official paid plans can offer a more predictable way to remove platform-served advertisements where available, though creator sponsorships may remain. Review the plan’s terms and regional availability. For browser-based filtering, avoid unknown scripts, modified apps, and requests for account cookies.
Paid blockers: compare a real benefit
Total Adblock, NordVPN’s evolving threat-protection offering, and Surfshark CleanWeb are options you may encounter in paid bundles. Their scope differs, so read the relevant review rather than assuming a subscription makes every ad disappear.
Pay only for a capability or support arrangement that matters to you. A visually cleaner page is useful, but a blocker cannot make a phishing page trustworthy, reverse a data breach, or replace device updates. For privacy, also review account settings, cookies, and extension permissions.
Questions, answered
Can an ad blocker protect every app?
A browser extension normally applies to its browser. Other filtering layers can affect more traffic, but have different limits. Check the particular product and operating system.
Is DNS filtering enough for YouTube ads?
Not reliably. Domain-level filtering cannot neatly separate ads and wanted video when they share delivery infrastructure.
Why does a website ask me to disable my blocker?
Some sites detect filtering or depend on advertising revenue. You can choose a narrow exception, a paid option, or another source. Avoid installing untrusted bypass tools.
Is blocking ads the same as being anonymous?
No. Accounts, browser fingerprints, cookies, and other signals can still identify activity. Ad blocking is one browser control, not complete anonymity.
