THE SHORTLIST / QUICK REVIEWS

Antivirus options for Mac

Start with an updated Mac and its built-in protections. If you want a paid suite, verify its Mac feature list: Windows backup, firewall, or family features do not automatically carry over.

Mac protection to compare

Bitdefender

Bitdefender Total Security is worth comparing when malware protection across several kinds of device is your main goal. Its desktop, Android and iOS apps do different jobs. Check the VPN allowance and the exact platform feature list before treating the bundle as a replacement for every security tool you already use. For macOS, compare the Mac app’s own controls rather than assuming Windows feature parity.

  • Windows, Mac and mobile options under a wider suite
  • Separate device protection from bundled privacy tools

Before you choose The standard VPN has a daily allowance. An iPhone app does not provide desktop-style whole-system malware scanning.

A broader security bundle

Norton 360

Norton 360 brings device protection and privacy tools into one subscription. It is worth comparing when you need antivirus together with a VPN, password manager, or family features, rather than another scanner alone. Start with the exact plan and the features supported on each of your devices.

  • Device security with privacy tools in the same product family
  • Selected plans add parental controls and Windows cloud backup

Before you choose Backup, parental controls, and other extras vary by operating system and plan. Compare the renewal charge as well as the first payment.

Cover a household

McAfee

McAfee is an option for households managing several computers and phones. Its product range combines antivirus with web and privacy tools, while eligible plans cover unlimited devices. Decide who needs access and whether the selected individual or family subscription covers those people.

  • Unlimited device protection is available on eligible plans
  • Apps for major desktop and mobile platforms

Before you choose Entry-level plans can have smaller device allowances. Identity and privacy services also vary by plan and country.

Mac protection to compare

ESET

ESET HOME Security offers several subscription tiers for device protection, with Windows, Mac and Android coverage. It is worth comparing if you want to start with security functions and add wider privacy services only when needed. The Windows feature list is broader than what every other platform receives. For macOS, compare the Mac app’s own controls rather than assuming Windows feature parity.

  • Essential, Premium and wider plans to compare
  • One subscription can cover supported Windows, Mac and Android devices

Before you choose Do not assume all Windows controls are available on Mac or Android, or that an account app provides iPhone antivirus scanning.

Mac protection to compare

Avast

Avast offers a free entry point and paid Premium Security features, now presented within the Avast One app on its product page. It suits readers who want to compare the basic protection with specific extras before buying. Inspect the feature table for your device and review optional components during installation. For macOS, compare the Mac app’s own controls rather than assuming Windows feature parity.

  • Compare free protection with the extras you need
  • Desktop and mobile feature lists are documented separately

Before you choose Product names and bundles can change. Match the installed app and device allowance to the exact offer at checkout.

Mac protection to compare

Malwarebytes

Malwarebytes makes the distinction between a free cleanup tool and paid ongoing protection particularly important. Premium Security adds real-time protection, with features that vary by operating system and plan. Choose it by the prevention you need, not simply because the free scanner found something once. For macOS, compare the Mac app’s own controls rather than assuming Windows feature parity.

  • Free cleanup and paid ongoing protection serve different tasks
  • Desktop and mobile feature tables clarify coverage

Before you choose Check what remains active after a trial and review compatibility before running two real-time security suites together.

Antivirus with optional extras

TotalAV

TotalAV offers antivirus packages for people who want scanning and device-security tools in one interface. Compare the paid protection level with what your operating system already provides, then decide whether bundled privacy or maintenance tools solve an additional problem for you.

  • Paid real-time protection for supported desktop platforms
  • Packages combine antivirus with additional tools at different tiers

Before you choose A free scan is not the same as ongoing real-time protection. Check the selected plan, optional add-ons, and automatic renewal.

The useful answer

Keep macOS and its built-in protections current first. Additional security software may be useful for specific scanning, support, or management needs, but a Mac is neither invulnerable nor automatically unsafe without a subscription.

Understand your starting point

Apple’s platform includes safeguards designed to check software and identify known threats. These reduce risk, but users can still be tricked into approving an installation, entering account details on a fake page, or granting unnecessary permissions. A product decision should begin with those actual risks.

Device protection has three roles: prevention, detection, and recovery.
A simplified explanation of the protection layer discussed in this article.

What to compare

Investigate the macOS editions of established security suites and compare them with what the Mac already provides. Verify the supported macOS version, processor architecture, requested permissions, and the exact feature list. A Windows comparison chart cannot be assumed to describe a Mac edition.

Four checks before installing anything

  1. Keep the Mac on a supported version of macOS with security updates enabled.
  2. Review installed applications, login items, and browser extensions.
  3. Check official installation instructions before granting full disk access or system-extension permissions.
  4. Evaluate a normal workday and confirm the app explains alerts clearly.

A misleading signal to avoid

Do not install a programme promoted by a browser message claiming your Mac is infected. Likewise, be cautious about optimisation tools that turn ordinary cache files into alarming “threat” counts. Malware detection and storage cleanup are different jobs.

An everyday example

If you share files with other platforms, explain that workflow when evaluating a scanner. Also test your backup restore process. Security software does not make a permanently connected backup immune to damage or accidental deletion.

Look at the whole subscription

List the devices the plan covers, the capabilities available on each, the total initial payment, and the renewal charge. A household bundle may be helpful when someone will actually manage the devices. It may be unnecessary when you only need one narrow feature on one phone.

A free scan can be different from ongoing real-time protection. Check what happens when a trial ends and whether payment details create an automatic subscription. Save the relevant terms and set a reminder before renewal.

After a warning, take a measured next step

Read the alert and record the detection or site involved. Use the security provider’s official support route if you are unsure. Do not restore quarantined files or grant new permissions just to make an alert disappear.

If credentials may have been exposed, secure the affected accounts from a trusted device. A local cleanup cannot revoke every stolen session. Our scanning guide and recovery guide explain what to check next.

Questions, answered

Is a paid app essential?

Not for everyone. Start with the maintained platform’s built-in protections, then identify the specific feature or support you still need.

Does more software mean more protection?

Not necessarily. Overlapping tools can create conflicts, permission exposure, or confusion. Use a setup whose roles and status you understand.
